Dromedaries
While you are on the trail, you will most likely stay at least one night at a dry camp. A dry camp is a camp where there is no water at or nearby the camp. There are some camps that are always dry, but for the most part this is something that your crew leader and lead adviser will be briefed on during their Trip Planning in Logistics.
If you are staying at a dry camp you will want to eat your dinner for lunch, and lunch for dinner. Philmont dinners require a lot of water to cook and clean up after. Make sure you have dinner for lunch before your last water source.
At your last water supply, everyone should drink as much water as they can, and fill up everything they have. Water dromedaries should be carried by the crew members who are on water duty, or by anyone who volunteers. The more, the better. Each crew should be able to carry at least 2 to 4 extra liters per person depending on how long you will have to hike without water. An average crew will have the capacity to carry 2.5 to 5 gallons of water.
