On any trip, the journey is what matters. Taking the train is the simplest way for everyone to enjoy the journey to Philmont. It does not require the attention of driving or the stresses of flying. Make sure you book your tickets far in advance. Just like the airlines, Amtrak as seats fill up and the date approaches their prices go up. So make sure your crew is booking tickets in advance.

When you take the train, you should know how it could impact your trek. More importantly make sure you plan your train to arrive 1 day before your arrival day. The if you are coming from the East, the train is scheduled to arrive in Raton, New Mexico at 10:56 am every day. Most days it runs several hours behind schedule. All this means is you will want to schedule a hotel stay in Raton.

The train schedule in Raton is the same every day. Trains traveling east arrive at 4:50 pm. Trains traveling west arrive at 10:56 am.

Traveling from Raton to Philmont is easy. In the spring you will receive a packet from Phimont with a “arrival plans” postcard. As long as you mail this card, Philmont will schedule a bus to pickup your crew. The round trip cost is $45 per person, you will pay upon arrival at Philmont.

Before the shuttle picks you up in, you will have time to enjoy yourselves in Raton.
