Nylon Cord
While you are on the trail you will need rope for a few things. Philmont recommends bringing three 50 foot sets of 1/4th nylon cord. You will use about 4o feet of this to setup your dining fly. Remember, once your ranger helps you set it up, DON’T undo the rigging until you get back to base! You may have the opportunity to use a second set of cord as a clothes line.
Remember: Never tie or hang anything on trees at Philmont. In the summer of 2012 there were 28,000 people who passed through the Philmont wilderness. If everyone tied rope to the trees in campsites, the bark would wear off. If you don’t believe us, check the trees around the bear bags. Their bark is destroyed from where crews have tied bear bags to them. When trees lose bark, they become more susceptible to disease or infection.
We know that parachute cord is light weight, cool, and fancy, but it can be overkill and can be a waste of money in this application. Get the inexpensive nylon cord you can pickup at your local hardware store or department store.
