Sunscreen
Did you know that SPF 30 sunscreen blocks 97% of UV Rays? SPF 45 blocks 98% of UV Rays. When you are at Philmont you don’t need to spend 2 arms and a leg to have spf 900000000 sunblock. Make sure you have waterproof screen and enough to reapply every 2 to 3 hours. You should also know that high altitude sunburns have been linked to skin cancer.
Check out Web MD for more info about sun screen and the Mayo Clinic for more information about high altitude skin cancer.
As a crew, you have two choices on how to divide the sunscreen. Some crews choose for everyone to get a 2 ounce bottle and clip it to the outside of their pack. Others choose to bring 2 or 3 full sized bottles. Both ways works well and have some pros and cons. If you have your sunscreen on the outside, it can pop open when you set down your pack and make one big smellable mess. If you have a couple of big bottles, you may have a bigger smellable explosion inside of a pack as well as a unfair amount of weight.
