Weight Bearing Caribeaner
Philmont Scout Ranch has about 1 black bear per square mile. Every night you you are on the trail, you will hang anything that may attract bears in your bear bags. Every night Scouts, Advisers, and even Staff Members make mistakes and forget about smellables that will attract bears. Instead of dropping all 75 pounds of bear bags to put your chapped stick into it, you will put it in The Oops Bag. You will need a weight bearing caribeaner for this.
You will only need one caribeaner, nothing too fancy or expensive. It needs to hold 100 to 150 pounds or at least of 1 kN. One Kilo Newton will hold about 220 pounds. You will not be using your own equipment to climb at Philmont, you will only need it to keep your smellables away from bears. We recommend get a caribeaner that has a screw lock.
