Camera
Philmont is located in some of the most beautiful country in the United States, make sure that you come prepared to capture every moment of it. Be warned, Philmont is not the most electronic device friendly place. Your camera will be exposed to 40 degree low’s and up to 100 degrees for the high. There aren’t many places on earth where your camera will be exposed to so much dust either. Oh, and make sure it’s waterproof too because if it’s not, the sudden start of a afternoon thunderstorm could turn all that dust inside your camera into mud destroying your chance of taking those awe-inspiring pictures. Check to see if there is a waterproof housing available for your camera.
Also make sure that you bring plenty of batteries for your camera. Back Country commissaries do not sell specialty camera battery, and there will not be any opportunity for you to charge your camera when you are on the trail. Please spare yourself the misery of lugging a solar panel around. You will be hiking during the day in the shade and spending your afternoons and evenings chasing the sun trying to get enough charge for your camera.
Make sure you bring enough memory/film for your entire trek. Back country commissaries will sell memory cards when they are in stock, but it’s better to bring your own so that you don’t miss a thing.
