Handheld Electronics

Philmont is a wilderness. There are no places to charge any electronics. Most staffed camps have enough electricity for emergency radios only. This power is provided by a car battery that is slowly recharged during the day, if there is no cloud cover. Under no circumstances will you be allowed to charge any devices at Philmont staffed camps.

If now you are thinking, I’ll just bring enough batteries! Here’s what we have to say: Philmont is a once in a life time wilderness experience. Most youth have never had an experience where they can be unplugged from the information age. Take the opportunity to try something new, unplug.

Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.
